Installation

The installation is completely destructive. The firewall will use the entire primary hard drive (but will ignore any other hard drives). We assume that the machine you run as your firewall will only be running the firewall and that you will have no need for anything else on the disk.

Once the boot process has begun, you should see a spinning character indicating that the hardware devices are being probed. After a short while, a menu will appear, with several options: viewing documentation, installing from CD-ROM, installing from an FTP server, upgrading from CD-ROM or an FTP server, or loading a configuration floppy. If you have a CD-ROM, you should select CD-ROM installation. If you want to install from an FTP server, you will need to enter some information about your default gateway, nameserver, and host name. Installing via FTP is only possible if the system successfully probed a network card during the boot process. This is usually the case if you have PCI Plug and Play cards, but not otherwise. If you wish to do an FTP installation using non-PCI or non-Plug and Play cards, you will need to preconfigure the system with the appropriate interrupt and other hardware settings for at least one network card. See Chapter 7.5 for advice on how to do this.

Once installation is complete, you should assign an administration password. You will be asked to enter the password twice, for confirmation. This password is the key that unlock all the doors on the firewall3.1 Choose a password that is non-obvious, and that is not a dictionary word. Do not write it down but commit it to memory. Guard it carefully, and change it regularly.

If you are upgrading from a previous version, you may want to restore your configuration from a floppy disk at this point. You will be prompted to insert and remove the configuration floppy disk at the appropriate points.

Once you have completed the installation, move the cursor to the `Exit Install' prompt and press Enter. You will be asked to remove any CD-ROMs or floppy disks. Once you have done this and pressed Enter, the system will reboot. This completes the installation stage.
