The firewall requires the use of modems for PPP or SLIP connections to the Internet (see Section 4.13) and/or for dial-in logins used for remote administration (see Section 4.14). These are mutually exclusive; you need a separate modem for each one. On the other hand, if you do not need any of these features, you do not need a modem at all.
